[no dialogue]. my name is tiffany cavaretto, and i'm a graduate dietetics nutrition student at easternillinois university. today, i want to talk to youabout fad diets. a fad diet is a diet thatbecomes popular very quickly
list some fad diets, and just as quickly fallsout of popularity. there are many ways that youcan recognize a fad diet. a fad diet often makes claimsthat are too good to be true, such as lose 10 poundsin two days.
it also promises a quick fixor makes recommendations based on a single study. fad diets also may eliminate oneor more of the five food groups and may label foods as goodor bad and it may have complex rules or guidelinesfor you to follow. there are many examples of faddiets out there, but today i want to highlightspecifically three of them and i will explain what thepremise of the diet is, the pros and cons of the diet, and why it is a fad diet.
the first i'd like to talkabout is the atkins diet. i have the book right here, you can still get it today. the book was written bydr. robert atkins in the 1970s but the diet didn't becomepopular until 2003 and 2004. it's a low-carbohydrate dietwith four phases with the first being the most restrictive, only allowing 20 grams of carbohydrates per day. as a person goes throughthe phases of the diet, they gradually add in morecarbohydrates only to the
point where weightis maintained. the pros of the atkins diet arethat it does help the person lose weight and improve theirhealth, but the cons far outweigh the pros becauseit's a very high-fat diet and it relies on ketosis for weightloss, which is the process of the body using fat for energyinstead of carbohydrates. it is unclear what the long-termeffects of ketosis are on the body because many organshave to work very hard in order to sustainthe process.
the atkins diet is considereda fad diet because it labels carbohydrates as bad. the next item i want to talkabout is the cabbage soup diet, and i have a printoutfrom the internet about what the guidelines are. it is a seven-day meal plan thatincorporates homemade cabbage soup daily with differentfoods each day such as bananas, other fruit, vegetables, meat, brown rice, milk, and tomatoes. the pros of the cabbage soupdiet are that it does help
people lose weight quicklyand the cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower in the soupdo help prevent cancer and it also helps people to curbtheir junk food eating habits. there are several cons tothe diet though, however. it's very bland, it promotesgas, it is very high in sodium, and it doesn't help peopleto learn long-term weight maintenancestrategies. the cabbage soup diet isconsidered a fad diet because it is very restrictive andonly has certain guidelines
of what you can do on certaindays and it does have you lose weight really quickly. the last item i want to talkabout is the zone diet, and i have the bookright here. it was written by dr. barrysears, and it incorporates nutrient ratios of 40%carbohydrate, 30% fat, and 30% proteinin every meal. the pros of the diet are thatit does help people lose weight and it does incorporatebalance of having
carbohydrate and protein andfat in every meal and snack. the cons of the diet, however, are that it is very complex and hard to understand becausethere's many ratios and percentages which make ithard to incorporate in practical terms ineveryday life. and also people have difficultyeating with their friends and family because they havesuch a structured meal plan, and it doesn'tpromote excercise. the zone diet is a fad dietbecause it has very complex
rules and guidelines. so i have these examples thati showed you already of the diets but this is a bookthat i read for a class called the paleo diet. this essentially tells youto eat like a caveman by incorporating lean meats, fruits, and vegetables while eliminating the grain anddairy products groups. and that's precisely why thisbook is a fad diet in the diet plan because it doeseliminate the two food groups.
so in conclusion, some dietplans incorporate slow steady weight loss, they emphasizemoderation and variety, and they do not focus on asingle food or eliminate any of the five food groups. let the dieter beware.
