this one way valve is supposed to permit your food to go down, but its not supposed to permit your food from the stomach to come upwards again. when this happens the acid and the food from stomach go back upwards into the gullet and this is called acid reflux. the number of symptoms the number of problems that come from this
acid refluxing backwards are known as acid reflux symptoms. in the simplest format people have the acid being thrown back onto the gullet causing heartburn especially after the ingestion of spicy or fatty meals sometimes this heartburn can extend all the way upto the neck and can also cause throat burn and a change in voice.
very often patients suffer severe chest pain exactly like they are having a heart attack. and when we investigate them we find out that the symptoms are actually acid reflux symptoms. so, these are the typical symptoms of acid reflux disease. when this happens with gastroesophageal reflux the whole thing is called gerd. or the gastroesophageal reflux disease. there are also a number of atypical symptoms for example there is the acid banging the throat can even cause cancer in the larynx or throat or voicebox.
it can cause chronic hoarseness of voice. young children have a lot of vomiting because of reflux. this acid going up can spin into the windpipes or the bronchi. and cause asthma. we now know that a large number of patients having so called childhood asthma are really having acid reflux that is spinning into the windpipe and causing asthma. last but not least because of this acid hitting back on the gullet they can have strictures or benign , its not cancer but benign blockages along the gullet. and sometimes acid reflux can give rise to the cancer of esophagus or adenocarcinoma.
